Health check: jarvisos-agent heartbeat every 300s plus pool health and degraded-drive count — proves the host is alive and the storage pool still has redundancy. Observed independently of the service.
Blind spot: No SMART or scrub-age inspection yet: a pool can be healthy and still be one bad week from not being.

Without it: Serving is unaffected. Backups stop landing, which means the RPO of everything that backs up here starts aging silently — that is the real cost of a long NAS outage.
